The story is set on a world with a dog-like native species and human visitors, told from the point of view of one of the former. Rulii, who is in an anomalous position as the liaison between his oppressed tribe and the ruling one, and between Aurel and humans, is thrown into a crisis when the humans' translator disappears before a crucial meeting with the king.
